A lot of us dream about working at NASA someday, but most of us (especially a dummy like me) would never get our applications past the first round. Well, a 9-year-old self-proclaimed “Guardian of the Galaxy” already has all of us beat. Youngster Jack Davis responded to NASA’s call for a “Planetary Protection Officer” with a application letter clearly stating why he thought he was the best man for the job.
Jack said, “I have seen all the space and alien movies I can see,” and added, “I’m great at video games. I am young, so I can learn to think like an alien.” Jack’s final plea for the job? “I may be nine but I think I would be fit for the job. One of the reasons is my sister says I’m an alien.”
The folks at NASA read over Jack’s heartfelt letter, but in the end they had to let the nine-year-old know that a “Planetary Protection Officer” probably wasn’t what Jack thought it was.
A NASA employee explained that the job is not exactly about fighting aliens: “It’s about protecting Earth from tiny microbes when we bring back samples from the Moon, asteroids and Mars. It’s also about protecting other planets and moons from our germs as we responsibly explore our Solar System.” NASA also encouraged Jack to apply to more jobs with the agency when he gets just a little bit older.
Here is the letter Jack sent and the reply he got in their entirety:
I think this kid has a bright future, don’t you?
