the-us-didnt-change-immigrants-names-at-ellis

The US didn’t change immigrants’ names at Ellis Island in the late 1800s. Names were recorded when immigrants left their countries and confirmed using the ship’s manifest when they arrived. Most of the changed names were likely a result of errors, passengers giving false names, or people changing their own names at a later date. Source Source 2 Source 3
