You’ve likely seen the tragic images of the remains of Pompeii – the city that was covered in boiling volcanic ash too quickly for its citizens to get themselves and their families to safety. Their bodies are frozen in time, and many of them were uncovered by archaeologists centuries later still embracing their loved one during their final moments on Earth.

Well, a new image recently came to light, and it’s of a man who also seems to be embracing his loved one. Because it looks as if he died with his penis in his right hand.

What was he doing with it? Well, I’m sure you can guess the internet’s prevailing theory…

Some people, on the other hand, tried to give the fellow the benefit of the doubt. I mean, there’s no way he can stick up (hehehehe) for himself at this point.

Others accepted that the picture is what it appears to be, but thought, what the hell – it’s his last five minutes, he can do what he wants with them.

The truth is that he might not even have seen the giant ash cloud coming. It now seems that many Pompeiians were killed by an initial blast of hot air and gas that they could neither have anticipated nor escaped. According to Dr. Alberto Incoronato of the University of Naples Federico II, they also likely didn’t feel any pain.

There were no signs of a voluntary self-protective reaction or agony contortions, indicating that their vital organs must have stopped within a shorter time than the conscious reaction time. The cloud was a mixture of hot gas and ash. It cause little damage in the town itself but killed these people instantly.

So there’s a chance this man was one of the lucky ones, who never saw death barreling his way before it had already stilled his heart.

…and his hand.

Because. You know. The simplest answer is usually the correct one and all that.
