Olympic heroes come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Barbies also come in all shapes, sizes, and colors as well. That’s why the new Barbie is a perfect combination.
In 2016, Ibtihaj Muhammad became the first Olympic athlete in history to wear a hijab during competition. Now she’s made history again as the model for the first Barbie doll to wear a hijab.
Muhammad said it was a “childhood dream come true” to have a Barbie doll modeled after her. The New Jersey-born and -bred fencing star said the new Barbie is such a big deal because she was never able to find dolls that looked like her when she was growing up. Muhammad even got a tour of the Mattel factory to see how her new doll is made.
Mattel’s Vice President of Global Marketing said, “Barbie is celebrating Ibtihaj not only for her accolades as an Olympian, but for embracing what makes her stand out. Ibtihaj is an inspiration to countless girls who never saw themselves represented, and by honoring her story we hope this doll reminds them that they can be and do anything.”
