Drunk Online Shopping May Be Worth Billions to the U.S. Economy

I have a feeling this is NOT going to be breaking news to a lot of people out there. Let’s have some real talk, shall we?

Sometimes, if you’ve had a little bit too much to drink (pick your poison), you get online and you buy stuff you probably don’t really need. Hey, it’s okay, we all do it!

And now there’s hard evidence that proves you’re not alone, friends. The Hustle conducted a survey of more than 2,000 Americans who consume alcohol, and the results are pretty staggering. The survey showed that 79% of them have made at least one drunk purchase, and the average annual amount spent per drunk shopper is $444.

Things to keep in mind: the people in this survey made an average of $92,000 per year, more than twice the national average in the U.S. Amazon is the place of choice for these shoppers, followed by eBay and Etsy. Clothing and shoes are the most common (drunk) purchases.

The map below shows a breakdown of where people are spending the most while ‘shopping under the influence.’ Kentucky has the highest average, FYI.

What do you think? Do you participate in this trend that seems to be pretty common? What kind of things do you buy while drunk shopping?
