America’s minimum wage hasn’t been raised since 2009. In 2016, nearly half of the United States continued to use the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, meaning a full-time employee’s salary would equal $15,080 a year before taxes. According to what MIT considers a living wage in those states, that’s anywhere from $4k to $10k less than what a single adult needs to afford food, health insurance, housing, transportation, clothing, and other basic necessities in a given year.
