Betty White’s and Rue McClanahan’s Golden Girls characters were originally reversed. White’s lusty character on The Mary Tyler Moore Show had producers eyeing her for the role of Blanche, while McClanahan’s sweet-yet-dopey character from Maude put her in the running for the role of Rose- but when the director had them switch roles during their audition, everything fell into place.
