College students used to mail their laundry home in boxes. Before laundromats started showing up in the 1930s, it was cheaper to ship dirty clothes back home than it was to hire a cleaner. As wardrobe sizes increased and better washing equipment grew more accessible, laundry mailing eventually became impractical and had mostly died out by the 1970s. Source
