Early farmers helped domesticate dogs. Around 7,000 years ago, when we began farming wheat and millet, human diets were heavy on the starches, and we fed our dogs the same foods. In order to cope, the canine genome adapted by making extra copies of the gene that digests starch, which therefore made dogs more reliant on us for food. Source
