Harry Potter fans are endangering the wild owl populations of Asia. In 2016, more than 13,000 owls were caught and sold as pets in Indonesian bird markets. Kids’ parents buy the birds for $10-30 each to give them their own Hedwig, but experts have long warned that owls not only make terrible pets, they generally die quickly in captivity.
