Refrigerator doors have magnetic latches because children used to die inside them. Before the Refrigerator Safety Act of 1956, the doors could only be opened by pulling the handle from the outside, which resulted in the deaths of many kids who got trapped inside abandoned refrigerators while playing hide-and-seek.
