The first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel was a 63-year-old retired teacher. In 1901, Annie Edson Taylor completed the stunt inside a pickle barrel in hopes of becoming famous.

When pulled from the water nearly 20 minutes later, she emerged from the barrel, battered and bloody, and said: 

“No one ought ever to do that again.”
