The ‘Groom of the Stool’ was a servant in the 1500s-1800s who assisted English monarchs with ‘bodily functions of excretion and ablution’. This position was a powerful one, because Grooms had access to the King or Queen alone, during their most intimate moments, and therefore learned many secrets that made them feared and respected by both the public and the royal court.
