The Macrauchaneia was a prehistoric mammal with a llama’s neck, rhino feet, a horse’s body, and a tapir-like trunk – and scientists have been trying to figure out what it actually is since 1834. New technology shows it did share a common ancestor with horses, rhinos, and tapirs, but its lineage split off 60 million years ago, and it ended up being a really weird hybrid of other weird hybrids. New research places Macrauchenia in the same group as this tapir.
