Keeping your hot beverage at the right temperature has long plagued mankind. You make a perfect cup of coffee (or tea, I guess), you get sidetracked, and next thing you know it’s cold and you don’t even want it anymore. And that can be devastating to a caffeine hound…I’ve heard.
Well, ladies and gentlemen, I’m here to report that all of our hot beverage drinking problems have finally been solved. A Los Angeles-based startup called Ember has created a smart mug that’s going to change your life.
The ceramic vessel looks like any other coffee mug (mostly), but a peek inside shows a state-of-the-art technological feat. Underneath the ceramic exterior is a stainless steel base that has four tiny sensors to monitor the temperature of the liquid in the mug.
You can even connect the mug to your phone via Bluetooth, and the associated app lets you control the mug’s temperature. By the way, this baby goes all the way up to 145 degrees Fahrenheit.
After you set the temperature you want, the sensors in the mug send updates to a microprocessor in the mug’s base whenever the temperature goes above or below where you set it and then adjusts itself to keep your temperature exact. The mug goes into sleep mode if it hasn’t been touched for two hours for safety reasons.
The technology in this brilliant creation is not dishwasher friendly, so wash the Ember mug by hand. The mug also comes with a coaster that serves as a charger, and together the two cost $80 and are available at Starbucks and Ember’s website. There’s also a $150 travel version of the mug if you’re on the go a lot. $80 may seem like a chunk of change for a mug, but come on – this baby is a game changer!
