20 Myths about women that are annoyingly untrue

Most women understand what it’s like to be stereotyped on a regular basis. The way we dress, wear makeup, talk and the things we enjoy always seem to be under scrutiny from others around us, sometimes including other women.

After a while, battling untrue myths and stereotypes can get annoying and frustrating really quickly. In a Reddit thread, women shared the myths about women that they’re sick of hearing.

We All Love Shopping

While many of us to love to go shopping, a lot of us also find the activity exhausting and somewhat a waste of time. It can be annoying when all the males in your life assume you’re a shopping fiend who’s great at picking clothes out.

It’s becoming increasingly common for women to consider not having a big wedding or even not getting married at all. Weddings can be very fun, personalized events, but not all of us really care about having one.

We Don’t Like Sports

With the increase of female athletes in the spotlight, this myth is becoming less popular, but many men still assume that women dislike watching or playing sports. If you keep that attitude up, I’m going to use my years of competitive boxing to knock you out!

Some women, just like some men, do really well with children and see them as an important part of their future. Some of us think about dropkicking every parent that asks us to ‘hold their baby’.

We Love Rom-Coms The Most

Women can like romantic comedies and still have an interest in other film genres. Some women find romantic comedies boring while some men love them. In general, we need to stop assigning gender-preferences to film genres.

If We Don’t Like Another Woman, It’s Because We’re Jealous

Just like there are many reasons why men might not like each other, there’s a plethora of reasons for one woman to dislike another that has nothing to do with jealousy. Maybe she’s just careless, dishonest, or disrespectful.

Men often assume that the women they meet will have neat apartments and have the ability to cook a good meal. While a lot of people enjoy having a clean space and consider cooking a hobby, I also know many women who live in mess and eat takeout daily.

We Dress Up And Do Makeup Just To Attract Men

I did not do a cut crease eye-shadow look paired with a mock neck top and slip dress for a man who can’t tell if I’m wearing makeup unless I have eyeliner on. While we occasionally might dress to impress a guy we like, we mostly do it for ourselves.

We Mean The Opposite Of What We Say

I dated a guy who bought me flowers for my birthday despite me adamantly telling him I hate flowers because he assumed I didn’t mean what I said. Women aren’t always trying to play games!

We Want Our Boyfriend/Husband To Be The Breadwinner

If my future husband makes more money than me, that’s fine. If I make more money than him, that’s also fine. We’re not so much caught up in having a “breadwinner” husband as we are in marrying someone who we enjoy being around.

Someone needs to tell product design and marketers that women don’t only want items in pink: we don’t need to have pink Playstation controllers, staplers, calculators, and camo pants. We like other colors, too.

We’re Supposed To Shave Our Body Hair

If you like to shave your body hair off, that’s totally fine—you do you, girl. However, it’s frustrating that there is an expectation that all women should do it. It’s my body and my choice, and, FYI, hairless body parts are not more sanitary.

Taking care of a baby is hard work and deserves to be treated as such. Additionally, women need time to recover from childbirth, which is very traumatic on the body and causes a lot of physical issues that need time to heal.

A lot of people like to put women in boxes, but that’s unfair. A woman can love to do makeup and wear dresses and still be a total tomboy when it comes to sports. A woman can love fashion and also be a math genius. We’re sick of being stereotyped because of one quality!

We Can “Hold In” Our Periods

Just, no. A period is nothing like having to relieve your bladder in the bathroom and we have no control over how or when it comes. Believe us when we say that we need to take care of things down there now.

Am I hot as hell? You bet. Do I love looking good? Of course. I can love the way I look and still care more about my intellectual abilities, my professional skills, and my social life with others.

If We’re Feminist, We Hate Men

Being a feminist means that you believe that women deserve to have the same opportunities and treatment in all aspects of life. It’s less about hating men and more about saying that women deserve the same level of existence as them.

If We’re Mad, It’s PMS

Just about every woman can attest to the frustration of being angry or upset and having a man patronizingly say, “Is it that time of the month?” No, I’m angry because you didn’t do the dishes despite the fact it was your turn!

Women Don’t Get Along Well And Are Gossipy

Women form incredible bonds with their female friends. In general, we get along better with women and tend to trust them more than we would trust a male stranger we just met. We support each other, not talk behind our backs.

We’re All The Same

Every woman, just like every man, is her own individual person with her own interests, past experiences, and personality traits. While most of us look up to other women around us, we also just want people to acknowledge that we’re all unique people as well.
