Groom insists on a Titanic-themed wedding, but his partner is not on board

From choosing attire, the menu, guest list, and decor, any married couple knows the hard work and compromise that goes into planning a wedding.

But how about wanting to make your entire wedding theme about one of history’s biggest disasters and Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters? One groom-to-be did, and now his fiancé is asking Reddit if he’s in the wrong for putting his foot down. Keep reading to learn more.

In April 1912, the RMS Titanic set sail from the U.K. on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean bound for New York City. The luxury liner was carrying approximately 2,200 passengers and crew when, on April 14, it struck an iceberg 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, and sank, killing 1,500 people.

But even over 100 years later, the disaster has ingrained itself in our history and culture and remains a fascination for many.

The fascination of the Titanic disaster was sparked once again when, in 1997, director James Cameron released his three-hour epic film Titanic, which cleaned up at the Oscar Awards and made lead actors Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio household names.

To this day, it remains one of the highest-grossing films of all time and is still a historical and cultural phenomenon.

User throwawaytitanic2 recently took to a popular subreddit to get a bit of clarity on a situation that involved him, wedding planning, and his fiancé’s favorite film.

He begins the story by explaining that he is a 23-year-old and is engaged to his 33-year-old fiancé who just so happens to be “obsessed” with James Cameron’s film Titanic.

While planning for their upcoming wedding, the Reddit original poster (OP) says his fiancé made it clear that he wanted their “whole wedding” to be Titanic-themed, even to the point where OP would dress as Jack and his fiancé as a male version of Rose.

OP himself is not a fan of the film and felt that it’s unfair to make the theme about something that only one person is passionate about. And that’s where the wedding planning suddenly takes a turn straight into an iceberg field.

“I told him I wouldn’t mind some Titanic references here and there but he started crying and said he wants the whole thing to be Titanic-themed because that’s ‘the wedding he always dreamed about,'” OP explains.

He says his fiancé then stormed out of the house and the couple did not speak to each other for two days.

OP says that he feels guilty for making his fiancé cry, but feels he’s being “unreasonable.” When he spoke to his parents about the issue, however, they were on the fiancé’s side and said that he should go along with the Titanic theme due to sacrifices being part of marriage.

He then asks Reddit if he’s in the wrong “for refusing to do a Titanic-themed wedding?”

Reddit voted and they overwhelmingly found user throwawaytitanic2 to not be in the wrong in this situation and they felt like this captain did not deserve to go down with his ship.

They were confused by the overall theme and wondered what the heck a Titanic-themed wedding would even look like. “I’d hate to be in the wedding band,” one person commented.

Other users focused their attention on the groom specifically and how he was acting more like Rose’s jealous fiancé Cal than Jack Dawson. They said that ignoring OP’s wants and then throwing a tantrum when he didn’t get his way is toxic, adding that his parents being okay with it was also concerning.

“Why are you marrying someone who is 1) ten years older than you and 2) apparently still a child?”

Other users focused their attention on the fact that Titanic was a deadly maritime disaster first and a romantic film second. They wondered what other disasters might be tastelessly co-opted for future wedding themes.

“I know you’re not crazy about theme weddings, but I’ve given this a lot of thought. Now hear me out… World War Two,” one Redditor joked.

In a later post update, OP explains that he and his fiancé reconciled and he apologized for overreacting. The couple has decided on a dual theme for their wedding of both Titanic and Batman because OP is a Batman man.

“Thanks everyone for your (mostly) helpful advice,”he wrote.
