15 Netflix Shows You Should Binge Watch ASAP

Ah, Netflix. How did I ever live life before it came along? Not only does the streaming giant have all of my favorite cable TV shows, it’s also got a ton of original series that really break the mold in terms of creativity and storytelling.

My wife and I love curling up under the covers after a long day and binge-watching our favorite Netflix shows together. If you’re looking to do the same and/or your current Netflix queue is getting a little low, consider checking out some of these massively popular shows.

Black Mirror, 2011-Present

Black Mirror is a sci-fi/thriller show that features a new plot and characters in every episode. Usually set in a not-too-distant future, the central theme of the show is about how our daily dependence on technology can have some truly dark and terrible consequences.

House of Cards, 2013-Present

House of Cards features Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright in the roles of Congressman Francis Underwood and his wife, Claire. It’s about the lengths some people will go to for power. The deeply intellectual show, one of the first Netflix put out, quickly became a huge hit.

Godless, 2017

Godless revolves around a team of roving bandits who arrive upon a town in the Wild West that is curiously populated by only women (seriously badass women, btw). The show has received great reviews, although a second season is currently unconfirmed.

Narcos, 2015-Present

Narcos is a show about legendary Colombian drug trafficker and cocaine kingpin, Pablo Escobar. At the height of his criminal career, Escobar was virtually untouchable, but the atrocities he committed to get there are a stark reminder of just how far someone who’s hungry for power can go.

Orange Is the New Black, 2013-Present

Arguably one of the biggest TV hits in the last few years, Orange Is The New Black follows the trials and tribulations of Piper Chapman as she serves her sentence in a women’s correctional facility. More than that, however, it’s a show about how people end up in the places they do.

The Crown, 2016-Present

The Crown is about the life and times of a young Queen Elizabeth II, all the way from her early childhood to events that occur today. Featuring a stellar cast and incredible performances, the show earned a Golden Globe nomination for ‘Best Drama Series.’

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, 2015-Present

This is one f my personal faves (perhaps due to the involvement of comedic genius Tina Fey). The show is about a girl who spent 15 years trapped underground by a religious fanatic, and how she starts to enjoy life after getting free. It’s a quirky show with hilarious writing – basically the perfect thing to watch after a bad day.

Master of None, 2015-Present

Master of None is a show about a young man struggling with his career and love life. The characters are incredibly relatable and the plot is generally casual and fun. Furthermore, the writing, direction and cinematography are absolutely brilliant.

Love, 2016-Present

This is a show about two people, each slightly broken in their own ways, learning to live with each other’s dysfunctions as they gradually fall in love with each other. Honestly, both the main characters are kind of terrible humans, but their journey is oddly compelling.

Stranger Things, 2016-Present

I can’t sing enough praises about Stranger Things, a show that I actually avoided for quite some time before finally giving in and checking it out. It revolves around a small town in the 1980s, where a young boy vanishes under mysterious conditions. The show feels like a strange, incredible mashup of E.T., Stephen King’s It, and Close Encounters. It’s absolutely awesome, so go watch it soon as you’re done reading this!

Sense8, 2015–2018

Another one of my favorites, gone too soon, sadly. This show was about 8 people spread all over the world who one day find themselves mentally connected to one another. They feel each other’s emotions, can see through each other’s eyes, and acquire each other’s physical skills. They’re also being hunted by a mysterious, evil shadow organization.

Jessica Jones, 2015-Present

Jessica Jones is a Marvel hero with super-strength who runs her own detective agency. She’s a deeply troubled character, but that’s also what makes her so compelling (and oddly endearing). Season 1 also features what I consider to be one of the most genuinely terrifying villains ever (David Tennant is a ridiculously good actor), so definitely check it out.

Daredevil, 2015-Present

Daredevil was Marvel’s first show on Netflix, featuring the Marvel hero of the same name. Attorney Matt Murdock lost his sight in a tragic childhood accident, but it also heightened all his other senses to superhuman levels. Now, he fights crime in the streets by night and in court by day.

Luke Cage, 2016-Present

Another entry from Marvel, this show features Luke Cage, a prison inmate who volunteers for a science experiment that goes awry and leaves him with super-strength and unbreakable skin. The show has a very fresh vibe and some truly great actors brilliantly portraying some seriously well-written characters.

The OA, 2016-Present

After disappearing/being kidnapped for 7 long years, a young blind woman mysteriously reappears again – with her sight seemingly magically restored. The show delves into some really interesting concepts. It’s definitely a show that requires mindful viewing, but it’s totally worth it.

A Series of Unfortunate Events, 2017-Present

Based on the incredibly popular book series by the same name, this show follows the unfortunate misadventures of three orphans – Violet, Klaus, and baby Sunny – and an evil count who is after their fortune. It’s whimsical, it’s funny, it’s brilliantly written, and it’s got Neil Patrick Harris as the evil Count Olaf. You need this in your life.
