I know that quotes are famous and lasting for a reason – that, in theory, they apply to the vast majority of human beings.
That said, I think we all have those quotes that just rub us the wrong way, right?
These 17 people are sharing theirs, so check them out and see if you’ve got any kindred souls out there.
17. Sometimes you have to.
“You can’t choose your family.”
You actually can. People do it all the time. It comes in four flavors: marriage, divorce, adoption, and disownment.
16. Did they even say that?
probably every quote on facebook that has a picture of a celebrity
“Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.” – Abraham Lincoln
15. If only indeed.
What goes around comes around. This is complete BS.
If only this was true, but it rarely is.
reminds me of that simpsons scene where bart says that to the mafia guys, and they’re like “yeah, totally, you’re right” before getting in their limos and being chauffeured away.
14. Honestly, that poor woman.
“Let them eat cake”
She never said it.
The phrase first appears in one of Rousseau’s first six books which were written in 1765, when she was only nine years old and published when she was 26, a few years after she became queen. Sooo its impossible for her to be the one who said it, especially since she lived in Austria until she was fifteen.
13. Or dogs. Definitely not diamonds, though.
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend. Toilet paper is.
I don’t have a square to spare.
12. Depends on what you mean by “worst.”
“If you can’t handle me at my worst, you don’t deserve me at my best.”
Surprising how many people say this and still wonder why they don’t have many friends
11. The real one makes more sense.
“Money is the root of all evil” is a common bullshit one people say. It’s a butchered quote.
The correct quote is “Love of money is the root of all kinds of evils”.
10. Honesty can be overrated.
“I’m just brutally honest”.
No you’re being an a$$hole and probably have no friends.
They care more about the brutality than the honesty.
9. You have to be active in your own destiny!
“Good things come to those who wait.”
It should be “Good things come to people who act patiently”
That best describes the meaning behind that saying.
8. You definitely need to know when to quit.
“Nothing is impossible”. Yes, there is, you should know how to give up.
I absolutely hated it when teachers would say this, especially when they couple it with the “It says it in the word, I’m possible” drivel.
7. Life isn’t that fair.
“hard work pays off”
You can mop a floor with a tooth brush in the same time it takes a hemiplegic to do it with a proper mop. Did it pay off? No.
Are you dumb for thinking blindly working hard is useful? Yes.
6. Not always, though.
“The customer is always right.”
I had people try to pull that on me when I asked for ID at the liquor store I worked at…
It didnt work. Show me your ID, or Ill show you the exit door.
5. In a perfect world, maybe.
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
What doesnt kill you has the potential to disable and traumatize you beyond repair ultimately weakening you permanently
4. Tommy Boy got it wrong.
“Luke, I am your father”
Its actually…
“No, I am your father”
3. Nothing keeps the doctor away.
“An Apple a day, keeps the doctor away.”
2. It’s just not true.
Lightning doesn’t strike the same place twice. Yes it does. If it didn’t, lightning rods would be worthless.
(I guess you could be really nitpicky about it and claim that it’s not striking the exact same place on the lightning rod every time, but the difference in the locations would probably be infinitesimal and not worth considering from a practical standpoint.)
1. That makes a lot more sense.
You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Why the hell would I just want to have cake? Am I some sort of cake hoarder?
The actual quote was originally “you can’t eat your cake and have it too”.
Mine is “if it’s not ok, it’s not the end” because that is just total crap.
