For most homeowners, a renovation can make a huge dent in the bank account. But one Cleveland couple came out of their home renovation much richer – $23,000 richer, to be exact.
The couple has lived in a house built in the 1940s for several years. Recently, they finally got around to renovating their old basement. They peeled back sheets of drywall and uncovered some strange writing on a cinderblock wall.

After some more digging, they found a small, lightweight tin suitcase in the ceiling.
“I took the box outside and gathered the wife. It has something inside, but not heavy like coins or gold bars,” the homeowner shared on Imgur. “Might get lucky though. Could be old sports cards.”

It was much, much better than that. The suitcase contained three stacks of cash, wrapped in wax paper and an old newspaper from 1951. Some of the bills are quite rare. The total value came to $23,000.
“Some of the bills were rarer than others. Some brown notes, a gold certificate and some star notes nearly uncirculated. All bills were from 1928-1934,” they wrote.

It’s not unusual for homeowners to find hidden treasures in houses from this era. The Great Depression and the World Wars led many families to get creative, picking hiding spots for their valuables all throughout the house.
So what will this lucky couple spend their newfound small fortune on? A vacation around the world? A pet elephant?
Nope, they’re going to use the windfall to help pay off their mortgage – a very responsible way to spend this unexpected wad of cash.
