I’m assuming that if you clicked on this article, you’ve seen Endgame.
If not, here’s your warning, because there are (obviously) spoilers ahead.
Seriously turn around. Okay?

Okay.
You know that moment in Avengers: Endgame when Captain America finds himself without a shield and picks up Mjolnir (otherwise known as Thor’s hammer) instead?
Well, fans have been speculating as to the reason that Cap was able to hoist the hammer now, even though he wasn’t able to in Avengers: Age of Ultron – remember, in that scene where the other Avengers try and fail to lift the hammer?
The theory rests on the idea that Odin enchanted the hammer so that only the worthy are able to lift it, and in Age of Ultron, Captain America was keeping a big secret from Tony – that Bucky was the one who killed the Starks. But he winds up revealing the secret in Civil War, unburdening himself and, perhaps making himself worthy to wield Mjolnir in Endgame.
Nice, right?
Maybe, but according to Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo, it’s wrong.
“In our heads, he was able to wield it [in Age of Ultron]. He didn’t know that until that moment in Ultron when he tried to pick it up. But Cap’s sense of character and humility and, out of deference to Thor’s ego, Cap, in that moment realizing he can move the hammer, decides not to.”
If you go back and watch the scene in Age of Ultron, the hammer does appear to move ever so slightly and cause a brief moment of panic in Thor, so their explanation isn’t out of the blue – or out of character for Cap – but it’s definitely not as interesting as the fan theory.
If you ask me.
If you ask me, part deux – sometimes these people can just keep their mouths shut and let us have fun, don’t you think?
Harrumph.
