You just know that there has to be a bunch of hidden treasures out there waiting to be discovered by some lucky sap. You don’t hear about it too much anymore, but mark my words, there’s gold out in them there hills!
Here are 5 actual, real-life treasures that we know exist, but haven’t been found yet.
Maybe it’ll be YOU…
1. The 2,000-year-old Menorah
The Romans sacked the Temple of Jerusalem in the year 70 AD and made off with the temple’s menorah. It was then brought to Rome, where some claim it was held in that city’s Temple of Peace, which burned down in 191. The whereabouts of the prized menorah are now unknown.
2. The Imperial Seal of China
The jade seal was carved in 221 BC for the Emperor of China. It was passed from dynasty to dynasty until the 10th century AD, when it disappeared. There have been several claims about the seal, but none have been verified.
3. The Crown Jewels of England
King John of England was on the run from enemies in 1216 when he fell ill. When his entourage rushed to get him medical help, they lost his baggage containing the crown jewels. They haven’t been seen since…
At least not those ones. There are new ones now, made for the restoration of the monarchy after Cromwell.
4. The Florentine Diamond
The diamond belonged to the Medici family that ruled the city of Florence and was said to be more than 137 carats. When the last of the Medici family died in the late 1600s, the diamond was passed to the Imperial Family of Austria. The royal family fled to Switzerland during World War I with the diamond and it has since disappeared.
Sadly, it is possible that it has since been recut into smaller stones and sold.
5. Confederate Gold
As is the case during wars, the confusion of conflicts ends up resulting in many missing fortunes. When the American Civil War ended in 1865, millions of dollars worth of gold went missing. Some think the hidden gold was meant to fund the South when the Confederacy would rise again (nope), and other history buffs believe that there might be $140 million worth of gold sitting at the bottom of Lake Michigan.
