18 People Weigh in on Whether or Not They’ll Wear Face Coverings After the Requirement Goes Away

Right now, we’re being asked to wear a mask (or two) when we aren’t able to stay six feet away from other people in public. It’s for everyone’s health, and for the idea that someday – hopefully sooner than later – we’re going to be able to return to a life we vaguely remember.

Now, I know there are more than a few downsides to these requests, mandatory or otherwise, but I can definitely say that one of the upsides of masking and washing hands and staying away from people is that no one – no one –  in my house (not even the toddlers) have been sick for over a year.

Not once, not at all.

So, when this is all over, will you continue to wear a mask? Will you wear it if you’re sick? If it’s flu season? Etc?

18 people share their thoughts on the matter below.

18. What a novel idea.

I lived in Japan for a while and this is what I miss most.

Just the overall idea that we shouldn’t, I don’t know, spread disease.

Luckily, I didn’t really need to adjust to mask-culture, as I was already used to it

17. Maybe this would be different now.

I read someone’s comment on another thread that they wear a mask because they had chemo and their immune system was compromised. Before COVID 19, people would question them and even tell them point blank to take the mask off because they were somehow offended by the mask.

On airplanes, strangers would tell the flight attendant that the mask wearer was trying to hide their face for nefarious reasons.

This person was sick, what kind of false entitlement do you have to have to berate a chemo patient?

16. They help with pollution, too.

I’ve been wearing masks much before Covid actually.

Pollution in my city is equal to smoking 2 packs of cigarettes daily. For ref. it is at an average of around 440aqi whereas healthy air remains between 0-50 aqi.

15. We all have our reasons.

I can mouth words to a song in public without letting anyone know I’m doing that so yeah.

14. Those wildfires aren’t going away.

I have a mask from California fires and from traveling overseas—I get a bronchial infection after two weeks in polluted areas, the mask solved that for me. At the gym, I’ve been wearing it for two years now.

Due to the close proximity of holding pads for someone in boxing, they often exhale with spittle landing on my face. I used to average 6 colds a year, then I started wearing a mask and got zero colds.

I’ve always worked from home, so the gym is the only place I come in close contact with people.

13. Or cams anywhere.

So bank cams don’t see my face.

12. We have nightmares about it.

Its going to feel like were naked the first time we go into the grocery store or mall without a mask

11. Turns out they’re useful.

I live in the Caribbean. We suffer from terrible dust in the air that blows across from the Sahara desert. I considered buying a shemagh to protect myself during these times of the year, but wearing a mask has done the job.

Short answer, yes!

10. Maybe it will be a generational thing.

My kid’s six, but he’s only really got developed memories that go back 2-3 years. From his perspective he’s been wearing a mask in public for nearly half of his life.

9. I never thought about this, but yes.

I am allergic to pollen so I’ll probably continue wearing a mask from April to June.

This year it was a blessing not having to sneeze all the time or take medication that makes me drowsy.

8. He must be from Iowa.

Probably not for regular use, but since i have them now i will probably try to follow Japan’s lead and wear one in the future if i feel sick.

Seems like a nice thing to become common courtesy if we can manage the cultural shift.

7. Being considerate! Who knew?

If I am sick yes.

Maybe if I can predict pollen stuff, definitely did not have allergy issues this year because of wearing masks.

6. Some of us have learned our lessons.

I am 100% going to continue carrying hand sanitizer and use it liberally when taking public transit.

I can’t believe I didn’t used to.

5. Who would?

Yes, during flu season or when I’m not feeling well. Just found out I have chronic neutropenia, so I am susceptible to bacterial infections specifically so I will take extra precautions.

Don’t want a viral infection to tax my system and cause me issues.

4. Most, even.

I always thought I should be when I worked in food service.

Ditto for when I worked in a microbiology lab.

I hope this stays in some industries.

3. Bless.

Yes. I grew a mustache.

It looks dreadful to most people (think two caterpillars slowly climbing my upper lip, because I have a scar directly under my nose where hair does not grow)

I find it hilarious every time I look in the mirror.

I may transition it to the Hetfield 93 down the chin stache at some point.

2. It has been a bonus in the cold!

Is nice and warm.

And hides my ugliness.

1. This would be such a positive for society.

I will if I have to go out and I’m sick like with the common cold or something.

Other than that, no.

I don’t know, y’all, but I am certainly tempted to make this flu season protocol going forward – being healthy is nice!
