It’s probably true that most people in the world want to do right by kids, even those who aren’t theirs – children are the future and all of that.
That said, when dealing with kids who aren’t yours, there’s much to consider…like exactly how much responsibility should you take for an injured stranger who is also a minor?
This guy found himself face-to-face with that dilemma when he was walking to his car in a mall parking garage.
There were some kids skateboarding and messing around, and before he could get into his car to leave, one of them broke their leg.
This happened yesterday – but I (28m) was at my local mall doing shopping, when I finished up I went out to my car. I parked in an above-ground parking building. when I got to my car, I noted there was a bunch of kid (i’d say 14-16, rough guess since I didn’t bother asking) they were skateboarding, just doing what kids do really.
Then suddenly, I heard a blood-curdling scream and I look over and I see a kid on the ground holding his leg. so I walk over to see if everything was okay, to say the least, everything was not okay.
OP offered to call an ambulance, and persisted even as the other kids insisted OP should just take their friend to the hospital, which was just three blocks away.
He called the ambulance after a quick assessment.
After the kid was put into the ambulance, and I gave my statement to the police (police show up to calls with ambulances to make sure they have all the needed info).
The kids were all still complaining that I could have just given him a ride to the hospital instead of making his parents “go into debt” – man I think they watch too much American TV because we’re in Canada – no one goes into debt for an ambulance ride here – last time I had to get an ambulance to the hospital,
It cost me like $50 (thank you Canadian health care)
OP explains that even though the other kids were accusing him of sending the kid’s parents “into debt,” they live in Canada, where an ambulance ride isn’t going to break anyone’s bank.
Anyways, later when I came home – I was telling my girlfriend about what went down. and she called me an asshole too, because “you should have just done the right thing, the kid was hurt and you have a car” and i said back “and ambulances are a thing, and i’m a total stranger to this kid and like what would’ve happened if the kid somehow got more hurt while in my car – not tryna catch a case”
Wanted some outside perspective, AITA for not giving the kid a ride to the hospital?
When he got home, though, his girlfriend thought it was mean of him to make the kid wait for an ambulance when he easily could have taken him.
OP says anything could have happened that could have made him liable for more injuries, etc, and he still thinks he made the right call.

Who does Reddit agree with? Let’s find out!
Things could go super sideways, and you’d have no way to go back.
Any doctor would say the same.
Even the medical professionals were on OP’s side.
He was the adult here, and he acted like it.
I really do hope his parents weren’t jerks about it, though.
OP was obviously in the right here, and now he’s got some ammo against his girlfriend.
Isn’t that what life is all about?
