Woman’s family is furious when she serves vegetarian ‘fake meat’

When you’re the family cook, picky eaters are a pain. They say they don’t like food even though they’ve never tried it. Even more annoying is the inevitable time you have to spend making two separate dinners instead of one and the clean-up afterward.

So the question is, do you hide food in their meals and trick them into eating it? That’s what the mom in this story did. Would you try it, or is that a breach of trust?

A Mother’s Dinner Dilemma

A Mom took to Reddit to talk about her struggles in regards to making food for her family.

Her two daughters are vegetarians, but her husband and son love eating meat. And she calls herself a “flexitarian.”

Two Dinners; One Family

The issue this mom is facing plagues many families – she has to make two separate meals for dinner.

This means double the pots and pans that need to be cleaned.

Fewer Dirty Dishes Would Be Nice

The mom would like her husband and son to meet her in the middle and try the alternative meat meal, so there are fewer dishes.

But they are stubborn and won’t change their minds.

She says, “My husband and son always turn up their noses at tofu or any other meat alternatives.”

“They say it’s just ‘weird’ that it’s made to resemble real meat.”

The Daughters’ Prank

So clearly, the husband and son don’t want to try something new.

But her daughters had an idea to prank their father and brother into eating the meat alternative food.

Nothing To See Here, Just Your Normal Dinner…

The idea was to make two pots of spaghetti sauce, as they normally would.

However, instead of one being meat and the other being meat alternative, they were both meat alternative – soy ground beef, to be exact.

Will The Men Actually Like The Food?

“The goal here was to see if their brother and father actually hated the meat alternative,” says the mom.

And if they didn’t, maybe the family could spend less time doing dishes after dinner.

And to the mother and daughters’ surprise, the men did enjoy the soy ground beef!

And when their plates were clean, the youngest daughter spilled the beans and told the men what they had eaten!

But The Men Were Furious

The men were furious about this and felt lied to because they were told they were eating real meat, not meat alternative.

And now the mother is wondering if she was in the wrong for deceiving them.

Its A Tricky Situation

It can be tricky to have people try new food without tricking them and betraying their trust.

Communication and compromise are needed for both sides to feel welcomed at the dinner table. And maybe a firm stance: “if you want something else, you have to do the dishes or make it.”
