Woman wants to give her baby the same name as her best friend’s ex
Picking the perfect baby name can be really tough, and the problem can only grow when friends and family decide to chime in with opinions of their own. One woman has said her best friend (and the baby’s godmother) has stopped talking to her after she chose to name her baby Alan.
The name holds a lot of meaning for both parents, but it reminded the best friend of someone less pleasant, and she made sure to let the couple know.
Naming Your Baby Is Hard

There’s a reason why there is so much information out there regarding baby names—because picking a name is HARD WORK!
There are so many different names out there, and it can be hard to choose a name when the time comes. For this mom, she and her husband had finally chosen the perfect name, but things quickly went awry when they told the godmother-to-be…
One Woman And Her Husband Had Finally Settled On A Name For Their Unborn Son

In a post on Reddit, the anonymous woman explained that she is expecting her second son with her husband.
The two have a two-year-old son, Harry, and have decided that they want to name the new baby “Alan.”
The Name Holds A Lot Of Significance

Originally, she and her hubby had chosen the name Alan because that was the name of one of her favorite characters from a book, and the name of her partner’s favorite teacher.
But, the name is also the same name as her best friend’s ex—which is why the best friend is claiming that she shouldn’t name the baby that.
She Was The One Who Ended Things

The Reddit user explains in her post that her best friend has a huge problem with the name of her godson, reminding her of her ex.
The mom-to-be explains: “I would understand this if they just broke up but they dated 10 years ago. She broke up with him. He didn’t cheat. She didn’t cheat. She just stopped loving him.”
Everyone Else Loves The Name

The post continues: “She insisted we pick another name but we love this one. My parents like that name. Even Harry likes the name. My in-laws love that name. Everybody is happy except for her.”
“She stopped talking to me on Wednesday. Some of our friends heard what happened and told me she said I was the ‘bad guy’ for picking that name to hurt her. Our friends didn’t say anything about their opinion since they don’t want to get caught up in it.”
So, The Woman Asked For Advice

The woman finishes off the post by asking if she was in the wrong for not wanting to change the name on her friend’s behalf.
Spoiler alert: Nobody thought that she was truly in the wrong—but let’s get into some of these juicy responses.
The Best Friend Is Being Dramatic

Many users such as this one pointed out that the friend was being pretty overdramatic.
And because the godmother is giving her the cold shoulder now, many people thought that was a sign that OP should simply pick someone else to be godmother.
Some Speculation Occured

Some speculated that perhaps the friend had never told the entire truth about what actually happened between her and “Alan.”
Perhaps something horrible happened between the two of them? Because, as OP said earlier, the situation would be different and perhaps she would be more understanding if there was a genuine reason for the name to be so tainted.
It’s Not Like She’s The Husband Or Anything

Even though the friend has an option to help pick names, she doesn’t really get to have a say in the final decision.
In a way, she is making everything about her, when it shouldn’t really be about her at all.
Commenters Shared Their Own Experiences

Other people shared their own opinions and experiences about “tainted names,” and this user explained that they feel like names don’t have too much attachment to them.
I mean, I want to agree with this, but I still sometimes tear up when I hear my dead dog’s name. But, if a friend of mine wanted to name her kid Charlie, I would never stop her.
An Update

Around a month ago, the woman who made the post commented and updated readers to let them know that she and her husband ended up picking a new godmother.
And it seems like she is happy with her decision, which is all that matters.
