This UK Company Is Serving the Homeless with 24-Hour Vending Machines

Winter is especially tough for people who are struggling to find work or a steady place to live, and even though homeless shelters provide for many of their needs, there are times when they are full, closed, or otherwise not accessible.

Those are the gaps that nonprofit Action Hunger was looking to fill when they came up with the idea for a vending machine for the homeless that would be accessible 24 hours a day. They reached out to dozens of vending machine manufacturers before securing a donation from N&W global and stocking it with fruit, sandwiches, socks, water, toothbrushes and toothpaste, along with other basics. The items are donated by local restaurants, charities, and supermarkets, and in order to access them, the person must have registered with a local homeless center. Action Hunter hopes this step will ensure that the items are reaching their intended consumer, and also that the homeless person will have access to the other important resources provided by the shelters.

The company is based in the UK, but it plans to expand the project to New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
