If you or someone you love has a disability that makes dressing and/or finding fashionable clothing or footwear a challenge, you’re going to love these new adaptable shoes from Billy Footwear. The company and their unique and easy-to-use design have gone viral after a special needs’ mom found them for her daughter and posted about them on Facebook.
Nicole Goodwin-Hubert writes that she’s so excited about the shoes she found for her daughter, Laura, asking, “Where have these shoes been all my life?” and telling other mamas that they are “unbelievably easy to get on over braces,” and they’re “so cute, too.”
The shoes incorporate zippers that run along the sides of the shoe and around the toe into their design, allowing the entire top to come loose and fold over. That means the person wearing them can place their foot directly into the shoe, without having to go through the process of wedging in their toes, then their heel.
Billy’s Footwear was founded by Darin Donaldson and Billy Price after Price was paralyzed following a fall, and making good-looking shoes that help the adaptive community has always been their priority. Their mission is to “create mainstream shoes that are functional, fashionable, and inclusive for everyone.”
It’s notable that they have tons of options when it comes to style – hi-tops, low-tops, laces, without laces – and different, fashionable fabrics and patterns to choose from. Because having a disability shouldn’t force people to sacrifice individuality and style, though it often does due to a simple lack of choices. It’s easy to see that the people at Billy are devoted to that mission, especially when it comes to kids, based on this quote from their website:
“Everybody is unique and we all want to express ourselves and feel confident.”
You can buy Billy Footwear on their website, at Zappos, Nordstroms, and at Kids Foot Locker.
