Recently we’ve lost a number of high profile human beings to depression, and there are millions of anonymous people who battle the illness every day – with so much public exposure to what used to be a private issue, many in our society have educated themselves. They are aware that it is no more of a choice than cancer, diabetes, a peanut allergy, or any other medical diagnosis.

But there are those among us who don’t empathize with the significant part of the population that deals with mental illnesses like depression. One such person tweeted that “depression is a choice” and brought out the rage in long-term sufferer and survivor, Andy Richter.

And while he’s funny as all get-out on television, he was in no mood to play nice when people’s lives are at stake – rightfully so.

Many came out in response, both in support of his struggle and in praise of his description of what it’s like to live with depression.
