Making Homemade Yeast Just Got Super Funny Thanks to Twitter

Recently, Sudeep Agarwala, a yeast geneticist, realized due to all our fervent baking, yeast was following in the footsteps of disinfectant and toilet paper. In other words, yeast is now hard to find on the shelves.

Rather than be part of the problem by whining and pointing fingers at non-bakers (hi) trying their hand for the first time at breadmaking, Agarwala knew he could be part of the solution. He started this very funny Twitter thread on how to make your own yeast.

And, why not make your own yeast, we’re making everything else ourselves. So, pull your guest blankets out of your ovens where you store them and read on. You’ll be making your own bread yet.

That leftover bag of prunes from when you vowed to get more fiber in your diet… that’ll do.

Spend some cuddle time with your yeast baby…

Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble…

The things we do now in the name of entertainment…

Before you know it, your whole kitchen will be FILLED with yeast experiments…

I don’t know about you, but I’m already collecting my leftover bits and pieces and figuring out the flour and water ratios. Who knows? This could be the next big thing with people trading yeasts across the country, Facebook groups, Stack channels, people giving artisan yeast as gifts…

This could be the start of something beautiful, y’all.
