Ahhh, food. If I’m being honest, eating is pretty much one of my favorite parts of any day. So believe me when I say that scrolling through these 13 unnerving food facts wasn’t easy – but as they say, the more you know.

10. Oysters are alive when you eat them.
Not only that, but if they’re not alive, they’re more likely to make you sick.
9. The off-putting white gunk in your salmon is actually protein.
So shut up and eat it.
8. Fruit Loops are all the same flavor.
It’s fruit flavor.
7. All peppers start out green.
They ripen to yellow/orange and then red. Stop hating.
6. Graham crackers were intended to tame wild sexual urges.
Supposedly a bland diet will encourage a bland life. Who knew?
5. There is only a 1 ingredient difference between Pepsi and Coke
There used to be two, when Coke contained cocaine, but now it all comes down to the citric acid that gives Pepsi a lighter, fruitier flavor.
4. Vegetarians shouldn’t eat parmesan cheese.
It’s created using calf rennet, an enzyme found in the lining of calves’ stomachs.
3. There’s no point to washing your chicken.
You couldn’t get harmful bacteria off with water, so all you’re doing is spreading germs all over your kitchen and utensils. But who does this anyway?
2. Butter should be stored in the fridge.
Tell that to my parents! It develops an unpleasant taste when exposed to oxygen (but if you use a stick every couple of days like my Midwestern parents, leaving it out is probably fine).
1. Mountain Dew is mostly orange juice.
