This is a sad but beautiful story that deserves to be shared far and wide: On her way to the hospital, a terminally ill woman in Australia expressed to the paramedics her wish to see the beach and the ocean one final time.
The ambulance crew from Hervey Bay documented the stop on Facebook. The post said,
“Above and beyond, the crew took a small diversion to the awesome beach at Hervey Bay to give the patient this opportunity — tears were shed and the patient felt very happy. Sometimes it is not the drugs/training/skills — sometimes all you need is empathy to make a difference!”
One of the ambulance crew members told a local news outlet,
“She was saying how she moved to Hervey Bay with her husband on the spur of the moment and they’ve been here ever since. She said she loved the esplanade and the beach and we said, ‘Well, do you want us to take you down by the esplanade and pop you out of the truck and give you a look at the ocean?'”
Paramedic Graeme Cooper, the man in the picture, said he used the patient’s vomit bag to gather water from the ocean. The patient put her arm in the bag and actually tasted the salt water.
What a great story of going above and beyond.
