Ceiling fans are wonderful inventions when you really stop and think about them.
What else can help cool down your skin without requiring a full-blown air conditioning system? If you live in a hot climate, they’re practically a godsend during the summer months, even when you’ve got the AC on full blast.
But people are also starting to realize that ceiling fans can come in handy in colder climates, too. Many people are taking to TikTok to point out that they just learned that their ceiling fans have hot and cold switches.
User Anthony Bertoncin first pointed this out after realizing that his fan had been on the “hot” setting for six years. He was pretty flabbergasted when he found out that this switch exists, as you can see in this video:
@bertoncin One. Little. Switch. 🤦♂️🤦♂️ #foryou #riseandshine #layerup #tellmeajoke
So, how do these switches work exactly? In the “hot” setting, the fan blades actually push hot air down toward the ground, since it naturally has a tendency to rise. The “cold” switch does the opposite, pulling hot air up toward the ceiling to make the room cooler. Mind = blown!
Other people were totally shook by this helpful revelation:

And surprised to learn that it actually did make their room cooler when they flipped the switch:

Ahhh, now that’s better:
@holamommyy My room just got sm colder
It’s kind of cool to see little life hacks like this making their way from person to person, all thanks to TikTok. Social media isn’t all bad, all the time.
What’s the weirdest little hack you feel you learned super late in life? How did you finally discover it?
