With the success of the NHL’s Winter Classic, where hockey teams play outside on frozen rinks in the harsh winter elements much to the crowd’s delight, I’m kind of surprised it took Major League Baseball this long to decide to host a game at an iconic site related to the game.
Because this is a wonderful idea both from a marketing standpoint for the league and for baseball fans around the world. Next season, on August 13, 2020, the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox will play a game on the outdoor field in Dyersville, Iowa, made famous by the 1989 film Field of Dreams.

Here’s the original trailer for the film just to give you a refresher.
Robert D. Manfred, Jr., the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, said about the game,
“As a sport that is proud of its history linking generations, Major League Baseball is excited to bring a regular season game to the site of Field of Dreams. We look forward to celebrating the movie’s enduring message of how baseball brings people together at this special cornfield in Iowa.”
A temporary 8,000 seat ballpark will be constructed for the game between the two ball clubs. And it’s a regular season game, too, so both teams will be playing for keeps in this groundbreaking event. A pathway through the movie’s iconic cornfield will connect the temporary stadium to the original film location.
Field of Dreams remains one of most beloved baseball movies of all time, and this historic game will be a great way to honor one of America’s most beloved traditions.
This is going to be great!
