Everyone is all amped up to see Joker when it comes out later this year, and for good reason: the trailer looks pretty incredible.
But you might want to go back and watch it a few times because you may have missed a few things the first time around.
Here are some of the things to chew on until the film comes out…
1. The shrink
Phoenix is talking to a psychiatrist in the trailer, and her nametag says “Debra Kane.” Batwoman’s name is Kate Kane. Coincidence?
We’ll have to see…
2. The notebook
Phoenix is shown writing in a notebook of “jokes” and this is clearly visible: “The worst part about having a mental illness is people expect you to behave as if you don’t.”
This movie is gonna be DARK.
3. Shout outs
Phoenix and his mother are watching television in the trailer and the names on the screen are nice shout outs to crew members who worked on the film.
4. Historical shout out
If you lighten up the screen in this shot of a diner in the trailer, you can see the street is named Jerome Ave. This is likely a nod to Jerome Valeska, the ‘Prototype Joker’ on the TV show Gotham.
5. A nod to his past
Robert De Niro’s character is seen hosting some kind of TV show or live performance. It is clearly a nod to De Niro’s 1983 role in Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy.
6. Transformation?
At the end of the trailer, Phoenix is seen walking down the same set of stairs that he was walking up earlier. Is this to symbolize his complete transformation from Arthur Fleck into The Joker? We’ll have to wait and see.
Here’s the trailer.
