Nerd alert! I love doing historical research in my spare time and I’m able to access all kinds of cool databases through my FREE membership at the local library.
And I can do it from home, too!
It’s so cool and it blows my mind that not many people seem to know about it or use it.
What are some other free online resources that people should use?
Here’s what Reddit users had to say.
1. Good to know!
“Ilovepdf
You can literally do everything on that page with your pdfs, join them, turn them into word, etc. and totally free.”
2. Cool.
“remove.bg is a favorite of mine.
pretty much completely removes the background out of any image almost instantly. works way better than Photoshop’s built in tools that accomplish the same thing.”
3. For the gamers.
“Eclipse, free online emulator you can play from your browser, even works on mobile for all you IOS people.
Can play NES, GameBoy, GameBoy Color, and GameBoy Advance games.
Hardest part is just getting the roms for the games, and even that’s pretty easy.”
4. Textbooks are expensive.
“I actually used Libgen to get my textbooks this semester.
Saved me about $200 for decade+ outdated books.”
5. Plane life.
“I love flightradar24 and have the app on my phone.
I’m fascinated by jets and air travel and love to see where they came from and where they’re going. There I am, this guy who travels almost nowhere internationally, looking at a little speck that’s been in the air for 12 hours and came from Malaysia. Or Oslo. Or Cairo. Knowing that information is fascinating.
One thing I love is that on Christmas Eve, they show the location of Santa on the map.”
6. I’m down!
“Oldgamesdownload.
This website has every single pc game from the 70’s,80’s,90’s till the early 2000’s.”
7. Blocked.
“Ublock Origin.
AdBlock Extension which blocks all ads you may find, can be used to bypass Login walls in most cases and has the feature to have you custom whitelist to allow ads on certain sites.”
8. A lot of media to consume.
“Pluto TV, Tubi, and Redbox all offer free TV and movies.
It’s not ideal if you’re a sports fan, but if you like old school shows, game shows, and movies you can find some good stuff for free.
Twitch also has 24/7 channels for MST3K and Bob Ross.”
9. Taxes.
“Simple tax softwares in the US. My free taxes, free tax usa, etc.
People with very simple taxes pay h&r or TurboTax to file when it could be free.
The IRS also has a free one on their site if your income is below a certain point (I wanna say 75k).”
10. Free images.
“Pexels & Unsplash are great free image sites you can use and often require no attribution!”
11. Might get lucky.
Has links to most states unclaimed money websites. Did you over pay a utility bill 12 years ago in OR. Pay for an online service that had to pay back money to users?
You can find money that was owed to you that you haven’t claimed. I found almost $350 owed to me by Google and Comcast from years ago.”
12. Free is good…
“Hoopla.
Free movies, books, audiobooks, music, ebooks, etc.
All free with a library card.”
