15 Mouthwatering Facts About Pizza

Pizza: we all love it. Unless there’s something wrong with you, and you’re one of the .00001% of people on the planet who doesn’t love it for some reason.

If you live in the U.S., statistics say you’ll eat roughly 6,000 slices of pizza in your life. I did the math and I’m currently on track for 38,000. It’s not good.

Anyway, here are 15 facts about one of mankind’s favorite foods.

1. Lombardi’s in New York City was America’s first pizza place. The grocery store started selling pizza in 1905.

2. During the early 20th century, pizza was mostly eaten by working-class immigrants from Italy.

3. After World War II, American soldiers who had served in Italy brought home a craving for the pizza and its appeal broadened in the U.S.

4. There’s a mini pizza for dogs called the “Heaven Scent Pizza” from Blissful Biscuits. It’s made of made of flour, carrots, celery, and parmesan cheese.

5. Chicago’s first deep dish pizza was made in 1943 by the restaurant that later became the Pizzeria Uno chain.

6. Only three people in the world have a degree in Pizza-ology. One of them is Domino’s founder Tom Monaghan, who also founded the business management program that offers the class.

7. The Domino’s “30 minutes or less” guarantee is still offered in some places around the world, including in Turkey.

8. The first frozen pizza hit the market in 1962.

9. Although pizza is an Italian invention, countries around the globe give it their own spin. Brazilians like their pizza with green peas, you can find fried eggs as a topping in France, and a crust made with mini hot dogs is popular in China.

10. The first pizza was ordered by computer in 1974. Michigan State’s Artificial Language Laboratory tested its new “speaking computer by ordering a pizza from a local restaurant.

11. The same guy who founded Atari founded Chuck E. Cheese’s as a way to make more money off of the game consoles.

12. A pizza delivery guy in Florida was confronted by robbers and threw a hot pizza at them in self-defense.

13. There’s a pizza museum in Philadelphia called Pizza Brain.
