21 People on What It Would Take to Make Them Happy

This question, posed to Askreddit, is a loaded one: “what would you need to be happy?”

There are so many different definitions of happy, so many ways to get there, and so many things that can steer you right off course, if you’re not careful.

These 21 people attempted answers, though, and it’s worth reading through them. You know, just in case we’re all missing something simple.

21. You can definitely buy those.

Guitar and amp keeps me happy.

20. It can be unexpected.

To not have to work 3 jobs just to get by. I didn’t think that at 33 years old, my dream would be “to work 40 hours a week like everyone else I know.”

19. Be careful what you wish for.

A normal brain.

18. It’s not the money, but the anxiety.

Enough money to never have to work again or worry about money.

1 mil would technically be enough to stop working. 2.5 world be better. 5+ mil would be ideal.

17. It doesn’t even have to be romantic.

A soulmate. Someone who will listen to what I have to say. A cool person to spend time with.

16. Love yourself, friend.

Not being autistic anymore :/

also autistic and I know what you mean. As much as I love having a unique perspective on the world it’s also a little scary to think that my head just operates completely differently than everyone else.

Everyone tries to say it’s this grand thing to make you feel better, all while knowing this world isn’t made for us and that they have no intention of making it tolerable.

15. Not much to ask for, eh?

Financial security for a lifetime.

Finding a partner to spend my life with.

Starting a family.

Parents age gracefully.

14. The commute is killer.

A job with a <20 minute commute where I’m only expected to work 40 hours per week.

I would leave for a pay cut at this point.

13. Simple, but tricky.

Less debt. More money.

12. Why is this so hard?

More sleep.

I truly feel like another person on days I get 7+ hours. 8 would be heavenly but I’m scared to get too greedy

11. Some things you can’t change.

Not to have severe depression and anxiety. And not having my great granddad die yesterday.

10. Make it happen!

A mid-sized dog.

Dumps are manageable with a small baggie.

Food won’t empty your bank account.

Large enough to not kill by accidentally stepping on but small enough to sit in your lap.

9. An oldie but goodie.

Money :/

I hate when people say “money can’t buy happiness.”

Money absolutely facilitates happiness. That said I’m pretty sure studies have shown that for incomes over a relatively modest amount (like 100k/yr) happiness tends to level out.

It’s like that whole Maslow hierarchy thing. Once we have the resources to address a few of those levels the rest tend to fall into place and we can work on happiness.

8. Like being an adult.

Live on my own, without debt, and have a stable income that lets me have fun in my free time.

7. But you still can if you want to.

Not having to work.

Having enough of a passive income from something so I can pursue whatever I want instead of throwing away 40+ hours a week for something I don’t give a sh%t about.

6. Some Taco Bell, perhaps?

i’ve got a girlfriend and a big bag of weed i’m already happy, what more do i need?

I have some doritos too.

5. A lucky person indeed.

My family.

4. We all need at least part of this.

The hospitality industry to get back on its feet (covid to f*ck off), my best mate and Co-chef to have his health problems resolved and 40 grand or so to help with opening a small restaurant.

3. Just do it.

to stop procrastinating on reddit and just get this report done that is due tomorrow.

2. The right one.

Right now just a laptop, I’m having trouble finding a used one with a disk drive to burn music onto CD’s. Gotta hustle my music the old fashioned way 🤟

1. Is that all?

If I was gifted 50k I’d be a joyous mofo

I’m not convinced, are you?
