There are two types of people in this world: people who have tidy, well-kept homes and the rest of us, who are honestly doing our best.
As one of the latter types, I can confirm that I would like to be tidier most of the time, but between work and kids and life, it can seem overwhelming.
If you’re looking for some simple, everyday changes you could make to improve your housekeeping skills, here are 5 things people with clean homes never do.
5. They keep things simple.
Clutter is the enemy of tidy, so try your best to keep your “stuff” to a minimum.
No one is saying minimalist culture is for you, but if you want to be “clean,” the fewer things around to gather dust the better – so assess whether or not things have a purpose and function before you leave them on the tables and walls.
4. They don’t let things pile up.
You can spend 20 minutes a day keeping up with things like dusting, sweeping, and cleaning toilets or you can waste an entire weekend catching up.
Procrastinators, I feel you, but wouldn’t it be nice to be able to lounge on a Saturday without feeling guilty at the same time?
3. They don’t save the big jobs for later.
Spring cleaning might be a thing, but if you wait for one time a year to purge and tackle some jobs that never get done otherwise, you’re spending a lot of time living in a house that’s not functional.
If things feel like they’re piling up, downsize them right away. If your walls or baseboards look dirty, clean them!
It’s as simple as that.
2. They trash unnecessary mail immediately.
Almost everything you get in your mailbox every day can go right into the recycle bin, and if you’re someone who enjoys paying bills digitally, you can opt for paperless statements to cut down even more.
If there’s something you’re not sure whether or not you’ll need it later, try snapping a picture, then trashing it.
Bottom line? Don’t set the mail down and leave it. If you do, you’re only setting yourself up for failure.
1. They have a place for everything.
Literally everything in the house should have a “home,” and everyone who lives with you should know where it is.
Protip: That place should never be on the floor.
These are definitely good goals and excellent jumping off points, don’t you think?
