Learn How Shampoo TV Commercials Use Green Screen ‘Ninjas’ And Sticks

I suppose that most things, upon closer inspection, aren’t the way you imagine them. I’m not sure that many of those examples would turn out to be as weird as the way shampoo companies  get their models’ hair to flip and flow in the wind during their commercials, though.

Hint: It’s not the product, y’all, so you can quit trying.

They use green screen, of course – the device that allows film editors to insert pretty much whatever they want into the background of a shot – but get this: they also use men dressed in green bodysuits and holding green sticks.

It looks like a bizarre setup for some promo for The Wizard of Oz, but no – the men use the sticks to manipulate the model’s hair, and the color they’re wearing makes them as invisible as the screen behind them.

People on Twitter responded to @Okolnir’s reveal as expected – with incredulity and wit. Some mused on the pay for a green ninja, while others had  hard-hitting questions for shampoo companies.

Like, okay, but how did they make model’s hair blow perfectly before the advent of green screen? Some of us remember those days, young whippernappers, and Jhirmack and bounce-back!

Sprinkle in the obligatory (but funny) jokes, and you’ve got yourself a thread worth reading.

Life goals:

One day, I hope to be rich enough to hire ninja to follow me around with sticks to make my hair flow perfectly in every situation, too.
