When 72-year-old English pensioner Stephen Mckears noticed objects being moved around in his shed, he wasn’t sure what to make of it.
When he realized that the things weren’t just moving, but were being placed back in a plastic tub, he thought he was being haunted by a tidy ghost – or he was losing it.
“One day I emptied the tub out and spread the contents on the side – and the next day they were all back in again. I thought I was going mad.”
Mckears, apparently not one for believing in ghosts, set out to solve the mystery. He enlisted the help of his neighbor, Rodney Holbrook, who helped him set up a trail cam in the shed, and neither of them could have guessed what they would see.
It was a very determined mouse using the tub as a nest. He lifted objects twice his size – even metal ones – in and out of the tub in order to keep things just the way he wanted them. McKears was gobsmacked, as of course you would be if you realized a mouse was cleaning your shed.
“The heaviest thing was the plastic attachment at the end of a hosepipe -and the chain of an electric drill. I’ve seen a mouse moving objects before to make a nest but never metal objects. I was quite amazed to see it – it is an amazing mouse.”
The mouse works most nights from about midnight until 2:30 am before, Mckears assumes, taking a break.
“It was going at it for about two hours that night – he must have had to go for a sleep after it.”
As far as why the mouse is so intent on keeping his things in his tub, Mckears has a (very British) theory.
“I’ve been calling him Brexit Mouse because he’s been stockpiling for Brexit.”
At least someone is prepared.
