As someone who had to deal with ticks on myself (and my dog) while growing up, I can attest to how tricky th0se little buggers can be. I spent a lot of time in the woods when I was young, so it was customary to have a family member look you over after a day out running around. You have to be careful, though, because you can easily miss ticks on yourself or even on another person, and that would be no good – especially if they’re the dreaded deer ticks (which carry Lyme disease and are very small).
These photos that a mom posted on Facebook show how microscopic they can be.
Christal Turner shared photos of her son and the 7, yes 7, ticks that had made a home on her son. The problem was they were so tiny she could barely see them. In fact, they really look just like specks of dirt.
Uggghhh. They may be almost impossible to see, but the ticks were embedded in her son’s skin and doing damage, no doubt.
It’s crucial to check yourself, your loved ones, and your pets for ticks because Lyme disease can be devastating if it isn’t treated. There are 30,000 cases of Lyme disease reported in the U.S. every year.
You can avoid getting ticks by wearing insect repellant, walking in the center of trails when hiking, and avoiding contact with tall grass. Once you’re back home, always do a full check of your body and look carefully through your hair.
Here’s a good graphic on where to check for ticks on your pets.
