Landlord Uses Scripture to Justify Raising Rent, but Tenant Knows Her Rights and Fights Back

Although there are laws protecting tenants from unscrupulous landlords, many renters find themselves at a disadvantage when rents are unexpectedly raised.

However, real estate professional Rachel Bell was able to use her knowledge of the law to school her landlord when he invoked scripture to raise her rent.

Her landlord pinned the rent hike to her door, referencing the biblical book of Numbers, chapter 18, verse 21.

Sunday school refresher moment:

And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.

King James Version

Basically, dude wants a rent increase of ten percent.

When Bell stopped laughing, she immediately set forth to gently correct her landlord and showeth him the ways of the law.

Bell knows her stuff. While she waited for Bruce the lousy lessor to respond, she wrote a blog post about leasing laws. Good to know for anyone who is renting their home.

Bruce finally responded with a sort of What? You took me seriously? LOLZ

While Rachel and Bruce’s rental contract negotiations were entertaining, it is a good reminder for those that need to rent. Know your rights. As tenants, you have the law behind you.
