From french fries to burgers to shakes, most fast-food chains stick with the staples. But over the years, major brands have released innovative items that have transformed the fast-food-industry.
Let’s take a look at nine items that revolutionized the way we think about fast food.
1. McDonald’s Supersized Menu

If you believe that bigger is better, than the best fast-food innovation was McDonald’s Supersized Menu.
This mammoth step for humanity allowed Golden Arches addicts to upgrade their fries and drinks to astronomical sizes.
Unfortunately (or fortunately), McDonald’s got rid of the supersize option after the release of Morgan Spurlock’s documentary SuperSize Me. It was fun while it lasted, folks.
2. McDonald’s All-Day Breakfast
There once was a time where McDonald’s would put your breakfast dreams to sleep at 10:30 a.m.
Many of us felt the pain of regret for hitting snooze and ending up in line at 10:31.
That all changed on October 15, 2015.
That fateful day gave breakfast food lovers the freedom to order a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit at any time. Breakfast for dinner, anyone?
3. The McRib

For more than 30 years, the mystique of the McRib has managed to survive.
It surely has its haters, but faithful McRib lovers will literally track locations where they can find this mystery meat sandwich.
Even if it’s not entirely made of ribs (or at all), the McRib remains one of the restaurant’s most sought-after items.
4. The Shamrock Shake
McDonald’s continues to dominate this list, but this time it’s for a cool, tasty beverage to balance out the meat sweats.
Originally served up in Philadelphia for St. Patrick’s Day, the Shamrock Shake saw a surprise release in September 2019, much to the delight of mint lovers.
5. Beyond Burgers
Once sold exclusively in Whole Foods, Beyond Meat Burgers have gone global.
Nowadays, you can find these vegan burgers in restaurants, stadiums, hotels and everywhere in between.
These plant-based burgers are so tasty that many big-name chain restaurants like Carl’s Jr., Subway and White Castle offer them on their menu.
It turns out that even some meat eaters enjoy the taste of Beyond Meat Burgers.
6. Taco Bell’s Doritos Locos Tacos
According to one report, since releasing the Doritos Locos Tacos, Taco Bell has sold more than 450 million of them.
While I can only take credit for a small fraction of that, I can safely say I’ve put down more than a few dozen.
Nothing beats beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato and sour cream enveloped in a deliciously crunchy Doritos Cool Ranch taco shell.
7. KFC’s Donut Sandwich
We’ve gone from burgers to tacos but now it’s time to show some respect for the good ole’ chicken sandwich.
Kentucky Fried Chicken has dominated the industry for years, but they recently broke away from time-tested tradition with the Donut Sandwich.
A spin-off of chicken and waffles, KFC broke barriers on the salty-sweet combo with a hot piece of its signature fried chicken nestled between two sugary donuts.
Now, this is just a test of the concept, and you might want to hit the gym after this one… but we think it’s here to stay.
8. KFC’s Double Down Sandwich
Speaking of KFC, the Louisville-based company decided to cut back on the carbs and eschewed a bun for…two pieces of fried chicken.
The hype surrounding the Double Down Sandwich grew so much that KFC’s website saw a traffic increase of 29 percent.
Making the Double Down Sandwich a dietary staple might increase your waistline by about the same percentage.
9. Popeye’s Chicken Sandwich
Finally, we’ve saved the most hyped for last.
Popeye’s Chicken Sandwich has literally led to traffic backups, fights and major sellouts. It’s the talk of Twitter and Instagram.
And it’s being endorsed by athletes and other celebrities. Apparently this reiteration of a classic chicken sandwich is worth the wait.
