It can be hard to find those perfect movies to recommend to some people, especially when you’re trying to come up with a good list for your girlfriend who didn’t grow up watching many movies…also, what planet is she from?
Anyway, that’s exactly what one guy did on Reddit when he asked for some assistance in compiling a list for his lady friend.
I know what I’d say: hit some classics like Back to the Future, The Terminator, and Goodfellas and then go explore from there in every single genre. You can never watch enough movies!
Here’s what AskReddit users had to say.
1. Referential movies.
“My wife who grew up without a tv says ‘watch referential movies. Things that are referenced constantly.
Like karate kid, terminator, lord of the rings, batman, Shawshank redemption, the bond movies anything that’s been spoofed or callbacked and referenced 100000 times.’. It apparently makes everything else funier and makes more sense.”
2. That’s a good idea.
“Me and my girlfriend watched 1-50 highest rated films on IMDB, I would honestly recommend that.
We loved it so much we are currently making our way through 50-100.”
3. Mind = Blown.
“The original Lion King.
I only say this because my husband had never seen it until recently which blew my mind for some reason.”
4. Get taken away.
“Spirited Away!
That movie is an experience.
If you like Spirited Away, you might also like Big Fish and Begonia.
It contains a lot of Chinese myth with a love story that’s 10x sadder. (spirited away wasn’t too sad)
The mid-credit scene was the saddest part imo
This movie destroyed me and I’m okay with it.”
5. Here’s a good list.
“The Princess Bride
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Star Wars: The Original Trilogy
Indian Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Shawshank Redemption
The Godfather
The Godfather: Part II
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Dark Knight
The Three Amigos
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Philadelphia
Saving Private Ryan
Forrest Gump.”
6. The stuff you grew up on.
“My wife came from a third world country, some of my childhood favorites like Goonies, Bed Knobs and Broomsticks, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Monster Squad.”
7. I’ll be back.
“Terminator 1 & 2.
She can have the luxury of never having to watch the others.”
8. A real gem.
“I haven’t seen anyone suggest Galaxy Quest, which is one of my favorite movies ever.
It’s super enjoyable even if she isn’t familiar with Star Trek.”
9. All ’80s, all the time.
“Ferris Buellers Day Off
Pretty in Pink
Footloose
Batteries Not Included
Uncle Buck
The Goonies
Can’t beat an ’80s movie!!”
10. A solid list.
“Young Frankenstein
Blazing Saddles
Spaceballs
Clue
Goodfellas
The Irishman
The Nightmare Before Christmas – great for Halloween and Christmas
Train to Busan – if she likes Zombie movies
Schindler’s List”
11. A great suggestion.
“Amelie.
A fantastic film and great introduction to world cinema.”
12. It takes a special type…
“The Room by Tommy Wiseau.
I told my wife she had to watch it with me if we were going to work. We’re married now.”
13. A cult classic.
“Donnie Darko.
Everyone needs to see it regardless of gender.”
14. Keep this in mind.
“Don’t show her anything with Chuck Norris, she’ll leave your ass… I know from experience.”
15. If she’s “girly”…
“If you’re showing movies to your girlfriend and she’s in any way “girly”, there are so many…
Dirty Dancing
Beaches
The Devil Wears Prada
Mean Girls
Love Actually
Legally Blonde
Clueless
Pretty Woman
Grease
Cruel Intentions
Thelma and Louise
Bridesmaids
Waiting to Exhale
Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion
Miss Congeniality
Bring It On.”
There are definitely some great recommendations in there, don’t you think?
What do you think should be added to the list that this guy is planning on giving to his girlfriend?
