We’ve Been Eating Sushi the Wrong Way All Along

Well, this is certainly disappointing. Yes, I’m looking at you (and at myself in the mirror). We’ve been living under the false pretense that we’re so cool and so cultured and that we’re experts at eating sushi, but the truth is WE’VE BEEN LIVING A LIE.

According to world-renowned sushi chef Naomichi Yasuda, there are certain rules about eating sushi that we’ve been missing since…well, since we started eating sushi in the States. First, eat sushi rolls with your fingers. That means don’t use your chopsticks. Also, don’t put the ginger in the soy sauce or eat it with the sushi, only eat it by itself to cleanse your palate between rolls. Yasuda also says that you shouldn’t shake the soy sauce off of the sushi. Don’t question the man, just stop doing it. And don’t dip your sushi rice-side down into the soy sauce. Uh uh.

More ways you’ve been messing up: according to Guff, you should eat your miso soup AFTER the sushi, and you shouldn’t mix in wasabi with the soy sauce because (presumably) the chef has already put enough of the green stuff between the fish and the rice.
