Lord of The Rings Superfan Spent 6 Years Building an Energy-Efficient Hobbit House

Are you a Lord of the Rings nerd like I am? A friend of mine loaned me the first book in middle school, and I was absolutely hooked from the first chapter.

One of the things that I love most about the LOTR series is the fans. They are REALLY serious about their love for all things Middle Earth, and a quick Google search will reveal all kinds of fan tributes – including this absolutely incredible Hobbit House!

Jim Costigan, a construction expert and LOTR superfan, spent almost roughly six years constructing his very own Hobbit Hollow in upstate New York. The project started out as a shed, but Castigan kept working on it and working on it, eventually turning it into a gorgeous, energy efficient home!

Then, in April 2018, Costigan decided to put the home up for sale.

Strangers from distant lands, friends of old, I invite you to come and visit an open house for this project my father and his family and friends have worked on for more than half a dozen years. It’s an advanced, energy sustainable home based off of The Lord of the Rings, and I guarantee you it is something you have never seen before. Feel free to stop by on Saturday if you’re interested, and please spread the word about my father’s dream that just went on the market! Strategically placed skylights like this one help make sure the home gets plenty of light.

Here’s a more in-depth look at the house and what went into its construction:

If I had the money, I would have moved in YESTERDAY.
