A New Adaptation of ‘The Wonder Years’ With a Black Family Is in the Works

In 2020, nostalgia is trending.

The past has become our entertainment of choice. Reboots are all the rage on streaming services, and the networks are starting to catch up, with old classics updated for the current climate.

One such reboot is The Wonder Years. This time around, the story will focus on a Black family in Montgomery, Alabama, during the turbulent civil rights era of the late 1960s.

The new version of this old classic will be produced by Empire co-creator Lee Daniels, who plans to include original series co-creator Neal Marlens as a consultant. The lead in the ’90s series, actor Fred Savage, is also set to direct and executive produce.

Savage has always said he wished to leave the series in the past, with no reboots and no sequels, saying the idea of the show was to celebrate “a very special, finite time in your life.” However, the new show has an entirely different storyline, so he’s decided to come on board.

The original show followed the exploits of the suburban, middle-class Arnold family from 1968 to 1973, as seen through the eyes of teen Kevin (Savage). The show also starred Danica McKellar, as Kevin’s first love Winnie Cooper and Josh Saviano as his best friend, Paul Pfeiffer.

According to ABC, the new series will celebrate a middle-class Black family’s “wonder years.” McKellar shared her excitement for the reboot on Twitter, with a picture of her and Savage in their former roles.

No word yet on when productions begins. And who knows? Maybe a member of the Arnold family will make an appearance after all!
