Larry David is famous for many things, but his empathy toward other people is probably not one that comes to mind.
So to hear that he’s responsible for literally saving someone’s life? Sounds unlikely.
That doesn’t, however, make it less true.
In 2003, machinist Juan Catalan was facing the death penalty at just 24 years old. He was accused of shooting a key witness in a murder case, and even though he claimed he had an alibi – he was at a Dodgers game during the time the murder was committed – the police weren’t buying it.
He produced a ticket stub, even, but they were ready to pursue his arrest and trial.
Catalan contacted the Dodgers, wondering if they could possibly have security footage or something similar that could help, and they pointed him toward the unlikely potential hero of our story – Larry David.
David had been filming an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm that day, and gave all of the footage to Catalan and his attorney to comb through, in case he might be in the background.
Luckily, they only needed to watch 20 minutes worth before they saw Catalan and his daughter eating hotdogs in the stands.
The footage allowed Catalan to walk out of jail after five months, and as for Larry David, he’s actually thrilled he could be of help.
“I tell people that I’ve done one decent thing in my life, albeit inadvertently.”
If you’re curious and want to know more about the case, and the incident, Netflix has a documentary about both – it’s called Long Shot.

Talk about a happy coincidence!
What do you think about this case? Think racism had anything to do with this guy getting collared in the first place? Because I do!
