I’ve watched my fair share of GoPro videos of amazing whale encounters and footage. They are incredible animals to watch in the wild. Photographer Beau Pilgrim was arguably nearly killed by this whale as it jumps out of the water. This footage is incredible — you see a fully grown humpback whale breach and land extremely close to where he was swimming + filming. The whale leaps in the air and does a full 180 turn.
Why do whales breach? Research shows that in rough seas it allows whales to breathe in air that is not close to the surface and full of spray. Also, it is believed that they use breaching to communicate when the noise of the ocean would mask acoustic signals.
This is crazy.
